Fine Art, a Colorist of the Carolina's

Lightly Lifting - Oil

“The aim of every artist, is to hold life fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it,

it moves them again.”

My multi-series modern paintings are inspired by the simplicity of George Ennis, an American tonalist and the color bravado of deceased artists, Lamar Dodd & Frank Licciardi who were mentors to me early on.

Creativity is a delicate flower. With hard work and dedication, blooms are not only sweet, but abundant.

I paint original luminous contemporary landscapes and abstracts I create in the studio. I am a Modern Expressionist. Using small studies done in the field or “en plein air,” (created in the field from start to finish), I get to work using those plein air foundations on bigger canvases.

The inspiration from the small field studies gives me the information and foundation to produce these larger contemporary textural paintings using glazing techniques and swipes of the cake knife size palette knife. My look is simple in theme.... familiar places and feelings of places in uncomplicated content making my paintings contemporary or modernistic.

Using soft brushes and the very large palette knife, I layer!  Soft layers, then palette knife payers, then scumbled layers, one after another, these laboriously constructed larger paintings become very luminous!

What they are saying about Karen:

“Experience the modern range of the artist’s contemporary work in oils--her mastery of en plein air techniques and the finest abstract studio paintings of her career.” Click here:

"I like to make each painting a visual metaphor between abstraction and realism. I love to paint mystery into my paintings. These paintings are a result of the heart, the hand and the mind in unison with nature and my soul!"

I take home studio visits 'by appointment only' and in Asheville NC's River Arts District Studio, located at 115 Roberts Street in Broken Road Studios, open studio daily. "I have irregular hours there, so by chance or appointment! Thank you for looking". Karen

"Inspiration exists," said Pablo Picasso, "but it has to find you working.
